Adam Silver’s Approach to WNBA Superstar’s Safety Raises Questions

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has taken a subdued stance on the safety issues concerning Caitlin Clark, a prominent figure in the WNBA. At the CNBC Sports Summit in New York, Silver addressed the controversy surrounding Clark, focusing more on the political implications rather than the on-court incidents.

Silver stated, “I’ve come to know Caitlin really well. She’s an incredible player and also an incredible person. She wants to focus on being the best player she can. She has become a bit of a political football in this country, and I think it’s incredibly unfair to her. It’s become political ping-pong with her.” This comment suggests that Silver views the issue as more political than sports-related.

Critics argue that Silver is downplaying the repeated physical confrontations Clark faces. Instead of addressing the physical challenges, Silver hinted that the focus should be on the surrounding controversy, not the incidents themselves. “Ultimately, the issues around Caitlin Clark are not largely about officiating, and that particular incident is not about whether a foul should have been called at the time,” Silver remarked.

Clark’s supporters have seen her endure numerous hard fouls this season, making Silver’s comments difficult to accept. Reports indicate that Silver consulted with WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert concerning a controversial incident involving Phoenix Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas, resulting in Thomas’s suspension following a throat strike.

When questioned about his involvement, Silver neither confirmed nor denied the reports, stating, “I’m not going to comment on [the Engelbert report], because I don’t think it’s fair to Caitlin, and to Cathy Engelbert either.”

While acknowledging that WNBA officiating needs improvement, Silver quickly shifted from broader discussions about Clark’s treatment. His response has sparked further debate about the league’s priorities and commitment to addressing the issues at hand.
