Supporters of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) celebrated as exit polls revealed the party won the most votes in Saxony-Anhalt’s regional election. The event took place at the party’s election night gathering in Magdeburg, Germany.
In the election, AfD surpassed Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) significantly. According to projections, AfD is expected to secure between 44.1% and 44.5% of the vote, whereas the CDU is projected to capture 18.5%. In 2021, AfD managed 20.8%, indicating a significant increase in support.
If these results stand, the CDU has seen its support halved, while AfD has doubled theirs. Should AfD form a government, it would mark the first instance of a far-right party taking power in a German state post-World War II.
The AfD’s influence extends beyond Saxony-Anhalt, as it is polling highly at the federal level as well. This potential victory would signify a major advancement for a party that domestic intelligence in several German states labels as right-wing extremist.
AfD federal leader Alice Weidel commented to ZDF, claiming that the CDU will not win another election. She emphasized anticipated growth across East Germany and the federal landscape.
Ulrich Siegmund, a 35-year-old former marketing professional, is the AfD candidate in Saxony-Anhalt. Known for his polished and friendly demeanor, Siegmund offers a radical platform focusing on immigration and mass deportations. His appearance is marked by a pristine white polo or dress shirt and an immaculate smile, setting him apart from other members of his party.
Siegmund has advocated for changes in migration and education policy, along with alterations to the region’s public broadcaster. He also supports closer ties with Russia and the MAGA movement in the United States.
Siegmund remarked, “We have written history,” and extended thanks to Chancellor Friedrich Merz, calling him “a very good campaigner for us.”
