Ahkello Witherspoon Retires from NFL at 31

Washington Commanders cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon has announced his retirement from the NFL at the age of 31. The team confirmed on Tuesday that Witherspoon has been placed on the Reserve/Retired List. To fill his position, the team signed cornerback Fabian Moreau.

Witherspoon participated in practice on Monday, but by Tuesday morning, he informed the Commanders of his decision to retire, according to ESPN. He had previously signed a one-year contract with the Commanders valued at $1.41 million in May, but he will not play for them this season.

Starting his football career in college, Witherspoon played for Colorado as a defensive back. Over 37 games, he achieved 71 tackles, made three interceptions, defended 27 passes, recovered one fumble, and forced another. In his senior year, he led Division I college football with 22 passes defended. The San Francisco 49ers selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, and he became a key player in their secondary.

During his time with the 49ers, Witherspoon started 33 out of 47 games, accumulating 117 tackles, four interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown, and 24 passes defended. After four seasons, he joined the Seattle Seahawks but was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers before playing for Seattle.

With the Steelers, Witherspoon played 13 games and started seven, recording 35 tackles and four interceptions over two seasons. He later joined the Los Angeles Rams on a series of one-year contracts. In his first year with them, he had his career-best season, starting all 17 games, making 52 tackles, and intercepting three passes.

Throughout his career in the NFL, Witherspoon started in 64 of 96 games, recorded 243 tackles, intercepted 13 passes, and defended 60 passes.
