The investigation was unveiled after the crew of the Beech King Air reported losing GPS navigation minutes into their flight. The disruption occurred while the U.S. military was conducting a planned jamming exercise, highlighting concerns over civilian aviation’s readiness for electronic warfare scenarios.
The Recurrence of GPS Interference
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released a preliminary report detailing the incident. After departing Roswell, New Mexico, on May 14, the air ambulance crew reported losing GPS capabilities. This took place during a GPS-denial exercise conducted by the military. Air traffic controllers requested the military to halt the jamming twice while aiding the flight. Investigators still need to determine if the jamming contributed to the crash.
Before the flight, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned pilots about possible GPS disruptions across hundreds of miles due to the exercise around White Sands Missile Range. Three other aircraft in the area also faced GPS outages during the event.

The crew of the ambulance later reported they could see the airport and requested a visual approach. European authorities continually refresh guidance for managing GPS interference, most recently addressing new jamming incidents in July.
The FAA remains silent on ongoing investigations but issues notices about potential GPS disruptions. The agency maintains backup navigation systems to aid aircraft during satellite outages. They have yet to respond to criticisms over the pace of technology upgrades for certified GPS receivers.

GPS interference represents a growing challenge in commercial aviation, particularly in Europe and the Middle East, where airlines routinely encounter jamming linked to regional conflicts.
