Alec Baldwin Faces Criticism for Sam Neill Tribute

1 month ago 0

Alec Baldwin is receiving strong criticism for his tribute to the late Sam Neill, who died on Monday. The backlash stems from a social media post where Baldwin expressed his condolences in a nearly 3-minute Instagram video. Critics pointed out that Baldwin mentioned Neill briefly at the beginning and end of the video, focusing mainly on his own experiences.

“I just wanted to come on here quickly and say, how stricken I was to learn of the death of Sam Neill,” Baldwin began his message.

In his video, Baldwin reminisced about filming ‘The Hunt for Red October,’ which started in 1989 and released in 1990. Neill played Captain Vasili Borodin in the film. Baldwin mentioned his admiration for the project, stating, “That is one of the few movies I have ever done where I remember the whole movie. That’s what a fan I am of that work.” He concluded with a message of love to Neill’s family.

Comments on Baldwin’s tribute were mixed. Some followers expressed disappointment, noting that Baldwin’s tribute seemed more focused on his memories rather than on Neill.

  • “Omg I’m sorry I thought you were paying respects to Sam Neill. I didn’t realize it was all about you,” one user commented.
  • “You didn’t say anything about Sam,” another added.
  • “Not much of a tribute to Sam but just a name mention. Do better Alec.”

Others defended Baldwin, praising the genuine nature of his posts.

  • “You always talk so calming, compassionate, and kindly about all people you have worked with,” a supporter commented.
  • Another user appreciated Baldwin’s conversational style: “Alec Baldwin talks to you like you’re a friend sitting beside you.”

Sam Neill passed away suddenly at age 78, surrounded by family. Neill’s family shared a statement expressing their grief, noting that although his loss was sudden, he had remained cancer-free.

“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia,” his family said. “The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.”

The tributes from friends and colleagues highlighted Neill’s impact as both an actor and a friend. Nicole Kidman, who co-starred with Neill in ‘Dead Calm,’ described him as “one of the greats,” recounting how he took her under his wing when she was 18. Kidman expressed her sorrow and stated, “He was charming, kind, funny, and intelligent.”

Toni Collette paid heartfelt tribute, sharing memories of Neill’s warmth and humor. She shared a throwback photo on Instagram along with her thoughts. “I love you, dear Sam. You hero. You legend. You sweetheart. Our great friend. Continue in peace wherever you are.”
