Americans Divided on U.S. Strategy Toward Iran

Recent findings reveal a nearly even split among Americans on the approach toward Iran with regards to regime change versus negotiation. A survey conducted shows that 39% support maintaining Iran’s current government with enforced limits on nuclear and missile capabilities. In contrast, 36% favor replacing the regime with one more aligned to U.S. interests. Meanwhile, 16% prefer a significantly weakened regime economically and militarily, and 8% remain undecided.

This survey, conducted before President Donald Trump and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding that included a 60-day ceasefire and arrangements for the Strait of Hormuz, highlights the political challenges faced by the Trump administration in executing this agreement. The memo aims to limit Iran’s nuclear capabilities, but the U.S. public remains divided on the nation’s ultimate policy objective.

Republican respondents appear less inclined toward diplomacy than Democrats. Half of the Republicans support regime change, contrasting the 25% who favor negotiation with Iran’s existing government. Additionally, self-identified MAGA Republicans showed similar preferences. Conversely, 52% of Democrats support a diplomatic approach, with only 25% advocating for regime change.

The Reagan Institute Summer Survey, conducted between May 26 and June 3 among 1,555 U.S. respondents, reflects these differences. The methodology involved live telephone interviews, online panels, and text responses. To closely represent the U.S. demographic, the survey results were adjusted based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s benchmarks.

This survey gains significance as Trump defends a newly signed memorandum, designed to de-escalate tensions and explore comprehensive agreements on Iran’s nuclear program. The agreement outlines a 60-day negotiation period between the U.S. and Iran to work toward a more extensive deal. It also includes provisions to aid commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and offers limited sanctions waivers contingent on continued negotiation efforts.

President Trump describes this agreement as a vital step toward avoiding larger conflicts and economic disruption. He emphasizes the potential benefits of stabilizing energy markets and creating opportunities for further discussions on nuclear restrictions with Iran.
