When examining AI’s promotion by companies, Americans identify different motivations. Results indicate a belief that businesses aim to simplify daily activities. Nonetheless, many also suspect intentions to supplant human labor.
Two-thirds of Americans express little confidence in governmental oversight leading to responsible AI application. Those skeptical about policy are usually those most concerned about AI leading to job losses.
Americans perceive various reasons for AI expansion by companies. Majorities cite the pursuit of power and worker replacement as key motives. While majorities see AI’s potential to advance science and medicine, they also note benefits like making tasks easier.

The concern regarding job loss due to AI persists. Both younger and older generations predict job reductions, with younger individuals slightly less concerned. This trend might relate to younger Americans’ familiarity with AI, as previous polling highlights their higher usage and understanding of AI compared to older counterparts.
This information comes from a CBS News/YouGov survey of 2,064 adults across the U.S., conducted between May 13-15, 2026. The sample is nationally representative with adjustments for gender, age, race, education, and 2024 presidential voting patterns. The margin of error stands at ±2.7 points.
