An Interview with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass

2 weeks ago 0

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is seeking re-election after finishing her first term as the city’s first female mayor. Previously, she served as a state Assembly speaker and a member of Congress. Her initial term began in 2022 after defeating billionaire Rick Caruso. Bass’s key focus areas have included reducing homelessness and increasing the Los Angeles Police Department’s ranks.

Achievements and Challenges

During a recent interview, Bass highlighted her efforts in expanding affordable housing as one of her major achievements. She underscored success in changing regulations and accelerating the approval process for affordable housing projects. Bass admitted that being absent during the January Palisades fire amid high wind warnings was her biggest regret. She emphasized the importance of being present when the city required her leadership, likening her absence to not being present for a family member in need.

Political Dynamics and Goals

Despite past collaboration, City Councilmember Nithya Raman, a former ally, is now challenging Bass in the mayoral race. Bass expressed surprise at Raman’s decision to run against her and noted that differences in political opinions exist with many individuals. She criticized Raman for allegedly not focusing adequately on her own residents.

Police and Homelessness Initiatives

Bass aimed to increase LAPD staffing to 9,500 officers but faced obstacles due to a broken hiring process and budgetary restrictions. Although funding was eventually reinstated, challenges in recruitment and retention persist. On homelessness, Bass advocates for the city establishing its own homelessness agency, independent of the county, arguing that current structures foster bureaucratic growth with no incentive to solve the crisis.

Community Concerns

Bass stood firm against open drug use near schools, maintaining that such conduct is unacceptable. She highlighted that arresting addicts without available treatment facilities is ineffective and called for more treatment resources from the county. Bass also opposed Senate Bill 79, emphasizing a belief in community collaboration for housing development rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Management Style and Philosophy

Addressing allegations of micromanagement, Bass stated that she steps in when projects stagnate, using her authority to drive progress. She also stressed that her commitment to public service stemmed from a lifelong dedication to activism and community improvement.

After the interview, as Bass headed to her car, she stopped and asked to revisit the first question: What was her greatest accomplishment as mayor? “Getting people off the streets and saving lives,” she said. “There isn’t anything higher than that.”
