A White House representative refuted the notion that President Donald Trump’s administration is swayed by “pardon brokers,” a topic explored on CBS’ “60 Minutes.” During the season premiere, the acclaimed news show featured a segment on lobbyists purportedly negotiating presidential pardons based on alleged connections to President Trump.
Correspondent Lesley Stahl noted that presidents have exercised their pardoning power since the era of George Washington, as it is a constitutional prerogative. The Justice Department typically reviews applicants, recommending those who demonstrate genuine remorse. Historical examples include President Ford pardoning Richard Nixon, and President Clinton granting clemency to Marc Rich after donations. Lesley Stahl also mentioned President Biden’s pardons, which included his son, Hunter, and Anthony Fauci.
“60 Minutes” delved into the role of “pardon brokers” who lobby for pardons based on alleged ties to the president.
Stahl continued by explaining President Trump’s approach to pardons, which includes political allies such as the January 6 rioters and financial figures claiming wrongful prosecution. She suggested donations bolster these efforts, noting that those with means often employ pardon brokers, lawyers, and lobbyists who exploit their connections for substantial fees.
Lauren Bis, a White House spokesperson, responded to Fox News Digital, denying Trump’s influence by any “lobbyists” regarding presidential pardons. She criticized President Biden’s past clemency actions, emphasizing that many of his pardons involved releasing violent offenders.
“Anyone spending money lobbying for pardons is wasting their money foolishly, and the President isn’t aware of these so-called ‘lobbyists’.”
Bis asserted the Trump Administration utilizes a thorough pardon review process involving White House counsel, the Department of Justice, pardon czar Alice Johnson, and ultimately, the President.
Bis further condemned Biden’s pardons and actions by liberal governors, accusing them of pardoning serious criminals such as child rapists and attempted murderers to enable their continued presence in the country.
While Fox News Digital sought CBS News’ comments, no immediate response was received. The latest “60 Minutes” season began amidst extensive layoffs of longtime producers and correspondents as editor-in-chief Bari Weiss aimed to reorganize the program. Former producer Guy Campanile accused the network of adopting “White House talking points,” mentioning their refusal to compromise principles.
“We would not sacrifice our principles by accommodating unverifiable notions or White House talking points in our reporting.”
