In a thrilling game against the Portland Fire, Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese experienced both triumph and adversity. The 24-year-old athlete showcased exceptional skills, scoring 16 points, grabbing 16 rebounds, providing six assists, and securing two steals.
Notably, Reese achieved a significant milestone by becoming the fastest player in WNBA history to amass over 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 250 assists in her career. Her performance added another impressive entry to the record books.
Angel Reese recorded her 28th double-double of the season on Friday night, tying her for most in a single WNBA season with five more games to play. Reese now has two of the three highest double-double totals all-time in a single WNBA season.
This achievement was highlighted by ESPN Insights.
However, Reese faced a setback when she received her eighth technical foul of the season during the fourth quarter, leading to an automatic one-game suspension. Reese is set to miss the upcoming game against the Minnesota Lynx unless the league rescinds the technical foul.
The incident occurred with 8:45 left in the game, involving a physical encounter with Fire guard Carla Leite. Video footage showed Reese pushing Leite twice during a play, which resulted in the penalty.
Dream head coach Karl Smesko expressed his intentions to appeal the decision, stating, “I’m sure we’ll appeal it. From my vantage point, it didn’t look like something that was tech worthy. So, hopefully, it’ll be rescinded.” Smesko defended Reese, referring to her commendable conduct throughout the season and expressing hopes that the suspension would be overturned.
“We’ll probably have a conversation with Reese,” Smesko continued, highlighting her discipline and performance earlier in the season. “She’s really managed to go a long time without getting a technical and never really deserved one.”
While reviewing the incident, Smesko reiterated his belief that the action was only a foul and not worthy of a technical penalty. He remains optimistic about having Reese back for the Minnesota game.
