Arkansas High School Football Player Finds Venomous Snake in Helmet

On August 11, 2026, a high school football player in Arkansas had an alarming encounter involving a venomous snake. While practicing, the player discovered the snake in his helmet after almost an hour of use.

The two-foot-long cottonmouth snake had managed to hide under the padding of the helmet during practice. The student realized something was amiss when he felt unusual movements in the helmet.

Kirk Horton, Maumelle High School’s Athletic Director, described the shock experienced by the athletic staff when the player brought the helmet for inspection after warmups. Horton stated, “It really was just shock and disbelief. I’ve got a better shot at winning the lottery than seeing this in my ten years.”

The local Maumelle Animal Services Officers arrived promptly to handle the situation. They safely removed the venomous snake and transported it to a nearby river. Initially, the snake was reported as a copperhead, but officers identified it correctly as a cottonmouth upon inspection.

Chris Davis, the Animal Services Director, emphasized the importance of checking gear before use. The Maumelle Animal Shelter shared a message on Facebook encouraging individuals to inspect helmets, shoes, gloves, and other outdoor gear thoroughly before use to prevent unexpected encounters.

The cottonmouth snake is known for its preference for dark and enclosed spaces. It ranks as the second most venomous snake in Arkansas, highlighting the necessity for vigilance when engaging in outdoor activities.
