Astros Pitcher Alimber Santa Shines in Unforgettable MLB Debut

Alimber Santa’s Major League debut was no ordinary experience, with the stakes set high as he aimed to preserve a no-hitter. The Houston Astros pitcher entered the game during a significant 9-0 victory over the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on Monday night.

Tatsuya Imai led the game with six outstanding no-hit innings, followed by reliever Steven Okert’s solid one-inning contribution. Then, manager Joe Espada called upon Santa to close the game. The 23-year-old pitcher delivered two impeccable innings, sealing his debut by striking out Brandon Nimmo. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Santa became the first player since 1900 to be part of a no-hitter in his Major League starting game.

In an interview, Santa expressed his awareness of the thrilling challenge at hand: “Yeah, there was some adrenaline,” he shared through a translator. “I was aware of the no-hitter, but I was just trying to calm myself down from the bullpen.”

Proud of Santa, Espada mentioned via MLB.com, “It’s a big night for him and his family. I’ve seen this kid for years, and this moment is monumental for both the organization and him.”

Earlier in the game, Imai had a challenging start, walking three initial batters, yet he managed to stabilize the situation effectively. Okert also contributed by walking one batter during his session.

This remarkable achievement marked the Astros’ 17th regular-season no-hitter. Including postseason play, they have achieved 18 no-hitters, with the most recent being against the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2022 World Series.

Before this, the MLB’s last no-hitter happened when Shota Imanaga and two Chicago Cubs relievers secured a 12-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 4, 2024. Blake Snell was the last pitcher to complete a full solo no-hitter, doing so for the San Francisco Giants against the Cincinnati Reds on August 2, 2024.

Alimber Santa, Tatsuya Imai, and Steven Okert commemorated the no-hitter with catcher Christian Vázquez after the game. The Astros (24-31) aim to further capitalize on their dazzling performance as they resume their series against the Rangers (24-29) at 8:05 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
