Current Quarterback Issues in Atlanta
The Atlanta Falcons are experiencing significant challenges in their quarterback position. On Sunday, they resorted to starting third-string quarterback Cooper Rush since both Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa were not active due to health problems.
Injuries Impacting Performance
Michael Penix Jr. is currently recovering from knee surgery, which he underwent after suffering an ACL injury last season. On the other hand, Tua Tagovailoa is sidelined for the second week in a row due to an oblique injury that occurred during practice.
Recent Game Struggles
During the game against the Carolina Panthers, Cooper Rush faced difficulties. He lost a fumble on Atlanta’s opening possession, leading to a turnover that the Panthers converted into a touchdown. Rush continued to struggle, throwing two interceptions during the game.
The performance was reminiscent of his earlier struggles against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1, where he also threw two interceptions.
Coach’s Reaction
“Obviously, extremely disappointed in that game and extremely disappointed in how that game started,” said Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski. “And then [we] could not crawl out of that hole. And in the second half, it got away from us. So very disappointed.”
Coach Stefanski expressed his disappointment, reflecting on the importance of avoiding turnovers. As turnovers and giveaways are pivotal in the game, Stefanski benched Rush before the third quarter’s end.
Introducing Jack Strand
Fourth-string quarterback Jack Strand was introduced into the game, but his performance did not improve the team’s situation. On his first pass attempt, Strand threw an interception returned 16 yards by Devin Lloyd, resulting in a pick-six.
The Falcons’ Future Plans
Looking ahead, the Falcons are optimistic about their quarterback situation. They hope Penix Jr. can return for their upcoming game against the Green Bay Packers. Additionally, there is some expectation that Tagovailoa might return, provided he can manage the pain with potentially an injection.
The Falcons are relying on these prospects to improve their quarterback room, but they have yet to see the benefits.
