Kristen Cruz aimed for an open spot on the sand at Oak Street Beach, pushing her team ahead in the AVP Women’s League Championship. The intense rally gripped the audience, but a quick decision brought success for the Austin Aces. Cruz remarked, “They were both at the front of the net, and I was back at the line. I honestly just wanted to end the point and saw open sand and just went for it. Luckily, it scored in the court.” This point gave the Aces a 12-11 lead in the second set, thrilling the crowd.
Taryn Brasher, Cruz’s partner, praised her play. “Electric,” Brasher said. “I love watching her just like falling into the sand and trust exactly what her decision-making is.” The Aces finished strong, scoring four of the last five points to win in straight sets against the Palm Beach Passion.
Despite leading the league, Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson fell in the championship for the second year. Previously, they won silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Meanwhile, in the men’s league, Phil Dalhausser displayed his skills despite a recent calf injury. Teaming up with Trevor Crabb, they secured their second consecutive title by defeating the New York Nitro duo, Chaim Schalk and James Shaw.
At this point in my career, I’ve played with multiple injuries. It is what it is. Every single guy out here is banged up, including Trevor. You just learn how to play with being uncomfortable.
Dalhausser’s control was evident in his semi-final against the San Diego Smash, where he contributed seven points in a 9-0 run, overcoming an initial deficit. Crabb acknowledged a slow start. “It was a little slow start, mainly by me,” Crabb said after triumphing in the first match.
Dalhausser sealed a 19-17 victory with a crucial block in the second set and added three aces, although not in the final match. “I practiced this past week… when I get my jump serve going… I got it going in one set,” Dalhausser reflected.
The Austin Aces overcame the Miami Mayhem in straight sets in the women’s semifinal. They bounced back from a 3-0 deficit to win 15-8 in the first set and claimed the second set 15-9. “It’s just taking it one point at a time,” Cruz explained, highlighting the team’s focus and strategic play.
