Baker Mayfield Signs Contract Extension with Tampa Bay Buccaneers

3 weeks ago 0

Baker Mayfield’s position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers seemed uncertain at the start of training camp. Initially, a new contract wasn’t expected until circumstances shifted. As the season unfolded, Mayfield’s status changed again.

Mayfield has secured a three-year extension with the Buccaneers worth $165 million. This move confirms Mayfield’s continued presence with the team. On average, his annual salary will be $55 million. This positions Mayfield among the league’s third-highest-paid quarterbacks, joining the ranks of Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Jordan Love, Trevor Lawrence, and Matthew Stafford.

Mayfield’s salary comparison with Burrow, Allen, and last year’s MVP might raise some eyebrows. However, the Buccaneers believe in his value and adjusted their offer accordingly. Recently, they have moved closer to Mayfield’s asking price.

Initially, the negotiations didn’t seem promising. When training camp began in July, there was a divide between the Buccaneers and Mayfield. Although the team proposed a contract extension, Mayfield felt the offer didn’t adequately reflect his worth. This led him to set a firm training camp deadline for an agreement.

Mayfield discussed the possibility of entering free agency after the season. Analysts suggested that he performs better when driven by determination, and they anticipated a strong season from him.

This tension was short-lived. The situation changed when the Buccaneers bypassed the self-imposed deadline and resumed talks. Mayfield’s frustration faded once the team presented a more appealing offer.

With the new deal, Mayfield remains with a team and in a location that he and his family favor. The new salary offer proved more attractive than steadfastly adhering to negotiation deadlines or exploring free agency in 2027.
