Bear Invades Colorado Home for Breakfast

1 month ago 0

In Colorado Springs, a family experienced an unusual morning when a bear entered their home in July and helped itself to breakfast in their kitchen. Security footage recorded the bear’s entry on July 21 as it wandered into the kitchen and picked up a snack.

Nerissa England described the event to Storyful, stating, “I was preparing for the day when I heard a loud noise. Concerned, I checked with my children, who are 8, 6, and 3 years old, to make sure everything was fine upstairs where they were playing.” Initially suspecting it was a fallen picture, England’s curious 8-year-old daughter Zara Lee stepped downstairs to investigate, accompanied by her father, who also wanted some coffee. Turning the corner into the kitchen, they found a bear rummaging through trash near the kitchen door.

The bear had accessed the house through a back door left open to ease the summer heat. It consumed Flintstones vitamins placed on a table, moved a trash can outside, and continued searching through trash, England explained. Zara Lee and her father managed to scare the bear away by making loud noises and opening the door.

England remarked to Storyful, “We’ll keep the door shut for some time until local bears find adequate food and start hibernation.” This incident underscores the growing number of bear incursions into homes across the U.S., reported by Reuters, causing high levels of bear casualties. A dry winter resulted in poor growth of plants, berries, and nuts, which comprise 90% of the bears’ diet.

Their remarkable sense of smell has drawn them to areas with human foods, contributing to record bear deaths due to euthanasia, traffic incidents, shootings, or electrocution as they interact closely with humans.
