Ben Jones, ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ Star, Dies at 84

Ben Jones, known for his role as Cooter Davenport in ‘The Dukes of Hazzard,’ passed away at the age of 84. He died of a heart attack in his home in Washington, Virginia, while waiting to watch an Atlanta Braves game. His wife, Alma Viator, shared the news and expressed her grief on social media, stating that she lost the love of her life.

Ben Jones was born on August 30, 1941, in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He began his acting career on stage and transitioned to film, debuting in 1972 in ‘Together For Days.’ His other film credits include ‘Moonrunners’ in 1975 and ‘The Lincoln Conspiracy’ in 1977. On television, he appeared in ‘Movin’ On’ in 1976 and later starred in series such as ‘Nashville 99’ and ‘The Magical World of Disney.’

Ben Jones gained widespread recognition for his role as the mechanic Cooter Davenport on ‘The Dukes of Hazzard,’ appearing in over 140 episodes from 1979 to 1985. He reprised his role in ‘The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion!’ in 1997 and ‘The Dukes of Hazzard: Hazzard in Hollywood’ in 2000. His last TV appearance was on ‘Surface’ in 2005, and he appeared in the film ‘Unbreakable’ in 2021.

Beyond acting, Jones also served as a U.S. Representative for Georgia’s fourth district from 1989 to 1993. His co-stars and friends, including Tom Wopat and Whey Jennings, expressed their sadness at his passing. Jones was remembered as a supportive, caring friend and an important figure in their lives.
