Ben Shelton’s US Open Journey and Future Prospects

2 weeks ago 0

Ben Shelton captured attention in New York with his unique approach to the game. At 23, Shelton exudes confidence, drawing strength from his experiences in team sports. This ability helps him engage with the crowd during critical matches.

Shelton has a passion for weekend tournament play. Despite losing the U.S. Open final to Alexander Zverev, he took pride in his performance. Facing a nearly 24,000-strong crowd, Shelton felt the weight of history. He aimed to break a 23-year Grand Slam title drought for American men and was the first Black man in the final since Arthur Ashe in 1972.

“Walking out on that court today, there’s nothing like it. I’ve never felt anything like that before,” Shelton said. “It’s an addicting feeling, being in positions like this.”

Learnings from the Encounter with Zverev

Shelton’s experience against Zverev might guide his career’s next phase. Since his rise in 2023, Shelton has shown raw talent with a significant serve. However, recent defeats highlighted areas for improvement, specifically his return game. Early exits at the French Open and Wimbledon underscored this.

Returning from Wimbledon, he trained intensively in Florida. He aimed to stay focused on early tournament rounds. His coach, Bryan Shelton, noted his improved tactical understanding.

“I think tactically, he understands what returning is about now,” Bryan Shelton commented. “He knows how to change positions based on the serve that he’s receiving.”

Shelton’s history as a relatively late starter in tennis informs his approach. Unlike many peers, he began focusing on tennis at age nine and switched fully from football at twelve. This has instilled humility in his game development.

Facing Zverev, a player he’s struggled against, demonstrated the tactical challenges Shelton faces. Zverev’s positioning and backhand prowess served as difficult barriers. Shelton aimed to counter with precise serves and aggressive net play, demanding high precision throughout a long match.

Lessons for Future Matches

Shelton acknowledged the need to balance addressing weaknesses while maintaining his game’s core aspects. He struggled with his forehand accuracy during the match against Zverev.

“I wasn’t accurate with it when I attacked with it. I made too many errors when I had the ball there on my strings,” Shelton mentioned.

Despite the loss, Shelton remains unbowed. He sees each final as a learning opportunity, gaining more clarity and motivation on his path. His goal is continuous improvement towards becoming the player he aspires to be.
