A 19-year-old resident of Beverly Hills faces murder charges after a violent clash in an alleyway resulted in a man’s death, leaving the community in shock.

The Beverly Hills Police Department arrested Conoray Lawantara on Monday. The L.A. County district attorney charged him with murder on Wednesday. The altercation happened shortly before midnight on Sunday in an alley on the 400 block of North Palm Drive, a residential area near the city’s Golden Triangle district. Officers found a man with severe neck injuries at the scene, and he later died in a local hospital. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity.

Brigette Barbie, a witness, described hearing distressing sounds and seeing a man, whom she believed to be homeless, suffering from severe bleeding. Police arrived quickly, questioning Lawantara. A video recorded by Barbie shows Lawantara with blood-stained hands, handcuffed, claiming self-defense. He stated that the other man initiated contact, and mentioned using his concealed carry weapon, a 3.9-inch knife, for defense.

“I didn’t reach for him first, he reached for me, his hand went to my leg.” – Lawantara

Lawantara added in the video that he sustained a stab wound and a bitten finger, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment. Barbie mentioned that Lawantara had a recent confrontation with the deceased over trash scavenging, describing the incident as excessively violent. Local residents expressed their alarm and demanded answers about the situation, questioning Lawantara’s motives.

As of Monday evening, Lawantara remained hospitalized and had not yet been arraigned. The Beverly Hills Police Department did not comment on Lawantara’s status or clarify the details of the altercation. Investigation into the incident continues.
