Blockbuster Success at Box Office: ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ and ‘The Odyssey’

In its second weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day continued its strong performance at theaters, earning $144.5 million domestically according to studio estimates. The Sony-Marvel film has reached $1.67 billion worldwide in just ten days, making it one of the fastest-grossing movies ever. In the U.S. and Canada, the film has accumulated a total of $655.1 million, while overseas, it has surpassed the $1 billion mark. This achievement dethroned Toy Story 5, which had a worldwide total of $1.07 billion, as the highest-grossing movie of the year. Notably, this is the first time a Sony movie has earned over $100 million in its second weekend.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey also made significant strides at the box office, crossing $1 billion in its fourth weekend. The Universal Pictures release added $31.5 million domestically, bringing its global total to $1.1 billion. This Homeric epic is Nolan’s most successful film in terms of global revenue, surpassing The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight. IMAX screenings contributed greatly to this success, with the film becoming IMAX’s highest-grossing domestic release with $147.3 million.

Both films are contributing to Hollywood’s most profitable year since the pandemic, with ticket sales up 18.5% from last year. The summer theatrical revenue is forecasted to reach $4 billion, marking a significant recovery for the industry. So far, five films have passed the $1 billion mark, making this the most successful year since 2019.

Despite attempts at counterprogramming, new comedies made little impact. One Night Only debuted with $5.7 million, and Super Troopers 3 opened with $4 million. A24’s limited release Tony garnered a strong per-theater average, while Mubi’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma also posted impressive numbers.
