Bobby Hunt, Auburn Football Legend, Passes Away at 85

Bobby Hunt, esteemed former Auburn Tigers football player, has died at the age of 85. His passing was confirmed by the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, which honored Hunt with induction in 2015. The organization expressed its condolences, extending thoughts and prayers to Hunt’s family and friends through a tribute on Facebook. The specific cause of Hunt’s death has not been publicly disclosed.

Hunt’s athletic career began at Lanett High School in Alabama, where he excelled as a quarterback and defensive back. Demonstrating versatility, he also played as a punter and punt returner. This multi-talented prowess continued at Auburn University, where Hunt contributed as both quarterback and safety under the guidance of coach Ralph “Shug” Jordan.

Auburn’s rivalry with Alabama drew attention from notable figures in the sport. Paul “Bear” Bryant, the legendary former Alabama coach, recognized Hunt’s exceptional skill, remarking that Hunt was “just a great football player — that’s all.”

In the 1962 American Football League draft, Hunt’s collegiate achievements earned him a selection by the Dallas Texans in the 11th round. Transitioning into professional football, Hunt specialized as a safety, making a significant impact in his rookie season with eight interceptions. His performance secured him first-team All-AFL honors before the Texans relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1963, becoming the Kansas City Chiefs.

Hunt’s career highlight came when he started in the Chiefs’ lineup during the inaugural Super Bowl against the Green Bay Packers. After three seasons, he continued his professional journey with the expansion Cincinnati Bengals, cementing a notable career in which he played 112 games, amassing 42 interceptions.

Beyond his playing career, Hunt contributed his experience to coaching, working as an assistant with the Buffalo Bills. His legacy remains in the halls of football history, and his influence extends through generations of players and fans alike.
