Remembering Matt McQuillan

Former PGA Tour player Matt McQuillan passed away at the age of 45. He died on August 5, surrounded by his family, as the Kingston Whig-Standard newspaper reported. Originating from Kingston, Ontario, McQuillan earned a scholarship to Oklahoma State in 2000 before transferring to the University of Georgia. Turning professional in 2003, he played 32 PGA Tour events, making the cut in nine.

McQuillan’s moment of fame came in 2011 with a T-3 finish at the John Deere Classic, aided by a remarkable final round score of 64. His last PGA Tour-sanctioned appearance occurred on the PGA Tour Canada in September 2016. He remained engaged in golf, impacting future players as a teaching professional in Canada. He fostered lifelong friendships and mentored many aspiring golfers during his career.

“Matty was a respected golfer, devoted son, hilarious brother, and friend,” stated his obituary in the Whig-Standard. His journey in golf began at ten, taught by his father, Mark, to swing a club. His contribution to the golf community will be deeply missed.

A celebration of his life will be scheduled, as announced by his family, at a future date. His earnings during his PGA Tour career totaled nearly $604,000. Matt’s lasting impact on the sport and his community remains significant.
