Boston Red Sox Navigating Trade Deadline Decisions Amid Playoff Race

In mid-June, it seemed almost certain that Aroldis Chapman, Willson Contreras, or Sonny Gray would sell their Boston area properties by the end of summer. Now it appears they might remain through college move-in day.

The Boston Red Sox entered the MLB All-Star break strongly, achieving a six-game win streak and getting within half a game of a wild card spot in the American League. Initially, veterans Chapman, Contreras, Gray, along with the rest of the roster, were considered likely trade candidates. This outlook, however, has changed greatly.

Despite this change, the decision to buy isn’t definitive. Many of the team’s weaknesses might be addressed internally. Garrett Crochet is on the mend, while updates on pitchers Ranger Suarez and Connelly Early suggest short recovery times. Anthony Seigler has strengthened the middle infield, yet the return of Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa promises added reliability.

Typically, struggling teams trade players, and successful teams address shortcomings to improve further. However, the last-place New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays have substantial payrolls, hindering major sales. Meanwhile, despite trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres still aim for postseason contention. The Detroit Tigers may reconsider trading ace Tarik Skubal.

The Red Sox, retaining key players like a leading closer, first baseman, and Gray, who nearly earned an All-Star nod, could have been highly sought after as the trade deadline looms.

Contreras and Chapman are contracted through next year, and Gray faces a $25 million mutual option, according to Spotrac. The prospects may be promising for the Red Sox, but they don’t yet dominate the AL. Offloading aging players for future assets might still be advantageous. A challenging schedule post-break could prompt Contreras and Gray to rethink their no-trade clauses, despite Contreras’s resistance to the idea.

In Tuesday’s All-Star Game, Tampa Bay Rays’ third baseman Junior Caminero was hit in the hand by a pitch, adding complexity to the AL East scenario. While X-rays were negative, the impact of losing top players is evident. The New York Yankees, for instance, have struggled without Aaron Judge. With the division leaders potentially weakened, this could be an opportune moment for the Red Sox to make their move.
