Boston Red Sox’s Shortstop Search at 2026 MLB Trade Deadline

The Boston Red Sox made their intentions clear as they searched for a new shortstop during the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline. Trevor Story, a high-paid player known for playing shortstop, noticed their aggressive pursuit for enhancements at the position. He felt relieved when the team couldn’t secure one, seeing a chance to reclaim his role.

“There was speculation, for sure. I saw it,” Story shared on Wednesday, as reported by Chris Cotillo of MassLive. “But that’s the business side of (the game). I can’t really control that, especially when I’m not playing. It unfolded how it did. Obviously, I’m happy about that and excited to get back in there, be part of this and contribute all I can to this incredible turnaround.”

Boston was connected with several potential options: Miami Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez, Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams, and Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz. However, talks fell through, and the Red Sox shifted focus to acquiring now-former Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman.

The team faces a challenge at shortstop now, due to Story’s absence related to hernia surgery. The club relies on players like Andruw Monasterio, Nick Sogard, and Tsung Che-Cheng to fill the gap.

Story will likely resume his role once he’s fit to play again, given his leadership status, dependable defense, and offensive capability. His return seems imminent, as he anticipates beginning a rehab assignment soon.

“We’re re-assessing at the end of the week, how everything went, then what it looks like going forward,”

Story said. “I’m getting to a point where we’re touching close to top speed. Now, it’s about how my body responds.”

The Red Sox are eager to add him to their roster again. However, for Story to maintain his position, he needs to perform at his 2025 level, not what he showed in 2024 or 2023.
