Brenda Fricker Passes Away at 81: Remembering the Iconic Actress

Brenda Fricker, the celebrated Irish actress recognized with an Academy Award for her portrayal of Bridget Fagan Brown in the 1989 film “My Left Foot,” has passed away at the age of 81. Her agent, Phil Belfield, confirmed that she died on Thursday night in Dublin after a period of ill health.

In 1990, Fricker became the first Irish woman to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her role as the determined mother of Christy Brown, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, who himself won Best Actor, left a lasting impact. Christy was born with cerebral palsy, able to control only his left foot. Belfield expressed profound respect, stating, “We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her.” Emphasizing their professional and personal connection, he added she would remain significant to many film and TV fans globally.

Fricker’s notable role in “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” in 1992, playing a homeless woman who strikes up a friendship with Macaulay Culkin’s character, is fondly remembered. Her extensive career included over 90 film and television appearances between 1964 and 2024.

She appeared in the original cast of the BBC medical drama “Casualty” and was part of the film “Veronica Guerin,” alongside Cate Blanchett. This film told the story of the Irish investigative journalist murdered in 1996.

Born in Dublin in 1945, Fricker was honored with the city’s highest accolade earlier this year, the Freedom of the City. Her autobiography, “She Died Young: A Life in Fragments,” published in September 2025, chronicles her childhood adventures with her sister Grania and her battles with personal challenges, including mental health struggles and being institutionalized. The book landed on the Irish Sunday Times bestseller list.

Simon Harris, Ireland’s deputy prime minister, referred to Fricker as a national treasure. He remarked, “She truly was among the greatest exports this country has ever produced and an ambassador for Irish talent on the world stage.” He also emphasized her unparalleled contribution to Irish culture.
