Polly Bibby, 26, an illustrator, aimed to look like a princess for her wedding. She chose to try classic eyelash extensions, diverging from her usual minimal makeup routine. Despite undergoing a patch test without any issues, she proceeded with the treatment in early July.

Initial Reactions

The procedure cost about $88, and initially, she was pleased with her enhanced look. However, hours after the appointment, her eyes began watering and felt sore. At first, she attributed this to hay fever.

Symptoms Worsen

“The only way I can describe how I looked is the man from ‘The Goonies’ with big puffy eyes called Sloth. I just didn’t look like myself.”

Her symptoms escalated with stinging and a yellow discharge causing her eyes to stick together. Alarmed, she contacted an urgent care line and was directed to a hospital’s emergency room. It was confirmed that she suffered an allergic reaction.

Treatment and Advice

At the hospital, medical staff prescribed antibiotics and antihistamines. She was advised to wait three days for the swelling to decrease before removing the false lashes. Ophthalmologist Dr. Rebecca J. Taylor emphasized the importance of skilled application in a clean setting to mitigate risks.
