Buffalo Bills Leave O.J. Simpson’s Legacy Behind with New Stadium

The Buffalo Bills are purposefully distancing themselves from O.J. Simpson as they move into their new stadium this season. According to chief operating officer Pete Guelli, Simpson’s name will not be featured in the new facility.

In their previous home, Simpson’s name was displayed on the Wall of Fame. However, in the new stadium, there will be no mention of the Hall of Fame running back. The decision stems from an organizational stance that Simpson does not fit the image they wish to project in the new stadium and gathering area, known as the “Family Circle,” situated at the front of the facility.

Instead of replicating their old Wall of Fame, the Buffalo Bills plan to highlight their history in the Family Circle by showcasing past players. Despite Simpson’s accomplishments on the field, including setting several rushing records and becoming the NFL’s first player to rush over 2,000 yards in a season, his legacy is marred by legal issues.

In 1994, Simpson faced charges for the murder of his former wife and her male friend. Although acquitted in the criminal case, a civil court found him liable for their deaths. He served nine years in prison for unrelated charges before passing away from prostate cancer in April 2024 at age 76.

Under the ownership of Ralph Wilson, the team had already begun distancing itself from Simpson due to these charges. This stance continued with new owners Terry and Kim Pegula, who acquired the franchise in 2014. Though Simpson occasionally attended games in Buffalo, the team did not officially acknowledge him.

The old Highmark Stadium is currently being demolished. This week, the team celebrated the opening of their new $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
