Caitlin Clark Reflects on Crucial Turnovers in Loss Against Las Vegas

On Thursday night in Indianapolis, Caitlin Clark faced some tough self-reflection at the post-game press conference. Despite her strong performance, she couldn’t overlook her eight turnovers and two missed free throws with only seven seconds left in regulation. Those mistakes contributed significantly to the Indiana Fever’s 86-84 overtime loss to the reigning champions, Las Vegas Aces.

Clark, a three-time All-Star who recently secured a spot on the FIBA Women’s World Cup team, took responsibility for the close defeat. She acknowledged her error, stating, “These are free throws I usually make, and it’s frustrating. A single successful free throw could have given us a two-possession lead and changed the game’s outcome.”

The night proved challenging for Clark, who still managed to score 20 points, provide eight assists, and hit two critical 3-pointers in the game’s last minutes. Despite these efforts, she lamented missed opportunities, like a dropped 20-point lead in the first half and not protecting slim leads at the end of regulation and overtime. Jackie Young capitalized on these openings, scoring a franchise-record 15 consecutive points spanning the second and third quarters. Later, Chelsea Gray punished the Fever’s late mistakes, hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 75 and securing the win with another buzzer-beater following Clark’s turnover pressured by A’ja Wilson.

Clark’s shooting statistics were not in her favor, with only 7 of 20 field goals, 2 of 10 3-pointers, and more fouls than rebounds. Even so, she offered no excuses and shouldered the blame. She expressed her determination, saying, “We still battled and put ourselves in a position to win. Honestly, it was my costly errors that affected us. That responsibility is on me, to help us win—that’s my job.”

The loss was not solely on Clark. During crucial moments, Kelsey Mitchell, named July’s WNBA Player of the Month, missed a free throw with 9.2 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Additionally, instead of preventing a 3-point attempt or securing a loose ball, Gray had the opportunity to tie the game.

Coach Stephanie White highlighted another missed chance, acknowledging her decision not to call a timeout towards the end of overtime contributed to Clark’s turnover. White observed, “Players already feel bad about missed free throws and plays. We need to keep them positive in such moments.” Aliyah Boston, another player, made a well-timed play but the ball bounced unfavorably.
