On Sunday, Caitlin Clark made her comeback to the WNBA Playoffs after missing out on last year’s postseason. Unfortunately, her return didn’t bring the desired outcome. Her team lost 102-85 to the Las Vegas Aces, the defending champions, in Game 1 of their first-round matchup.
A’ja Wilson, honored as the AP WNBA Player of the Year, demonstrated her excellence with a stellar performance. She scored 38 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, and added four blocks, two assists, and two steals. Despite the Fever’s loss, Clark also secured a double-double by scoring 15 points and providing 10 assists. Recently awarded the AP’s WNBA Comeback Player of the Year, Clark emphasized the need for her team to improve in Game 2.
“I think they’re good defenders, but at the same time, we made it hard on ourselves too. I thought just our actions were sloppy,” Clark expressed during the postgame media session. She added, “What we were running just wasn’t great, just nobody got an easy open look … but just gotta keep shooting at this point in the year.”
Clark gave her team a failing grade for making things difficult for the Aces defensively. Fever head coach Stephanie White highlighted the team’s defensive lapses, noting the Aces capitalized on 28 points from turnovers and their efficiency at the free-throw line, with 17 out of 20 successful shots.
Except for the fourth quarter, Las Vegas outscored the Fever in every other period, making 59.1% of their field goals. At one point, the Aces led by as much as 27 points, indicating that Clark and her team, who led the league in scoring during the season, faced a formidable opponent.
The Aces have now matched the odds with the Minnesota Lynx as favorites for the WNBA Finals. They hold a 1-0 advantage in the series, but Indiana will have an opportunity to even the best-of-three matchup in Game 2 on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
