Caitlin Clark’s Impact on Women’s FIBA World Cup

3 weeks ago 0

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis highlighted the influence of young players like Caitlin Clark on the World Cup’s growth and visibility. Speaking before the World Cup Final against France, Zagklis called Clark a leading star of her generation. He anticipated that women’s basketball popularity could surpass men’s at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Clark has played a significant role in raising the profile of the women’s game. Zagklis expressed pride in how players like Clark have elevated the sport’s popularity. He noted the support provided by FIBA and national federations in promoting the World Cup. The players themselves view this tournament as a unique moment.

I think what these players, Caitlin, one of them, have done in increasing the popularity of the women’s game is incredible. We should feel very proud about them. And I can tell you, me and my team have been supportive of what USA Basketball and each and every national member federation coming into the World Cup had planned for their promotion.

Zagklis referenced Iyana Martin from Spain as another emerging star, noting her recent sponsorship deal. He expressed confidence that female players could achieve the same, if not higher, popularity levels as their male counterparts by the Los Angeles Olympics.

Clark has been a major focus in this year’s tournament despite not starting a game. Alongside young stars Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers, Clark has consistently contributed off the bench. Her performances have made her one of the tournament’s top players.

The 24-year-old guard has averaged over 20 minutes per game, demonstrating her value to Team USA. She ranks third in assists with 5.8 per game. Her impact was evident in the opening match against China, where she scored 14 points and delivered 11 assists without turnovers.
