The results from California’s primary elections are still pending for several high-profile races. This delay affects the gubernatorial race and the Los Angeles mayoral race.
Gubernatorial Race
On Thursday morning, Republican Steve Hilton led the race for governor with about 28% of the votes. Former Biden official Xavier Becerra followed with 25%, and billionaire Tom Steyer was at 20%.
Los Angeles Mayoral Race
Vote counts for the Los Angeles mayoral race are also incomplete. Incumbent Mayor Karen Bass secured her position for the November election. Spencer Pratt held second place early Wednesday, but final results are pending. Under California’s rules, the top two performers in state primaries, regardless of party, move on to the November general election.
“It’s not about representing just Democrats, Republicans, or independents. It’s about any Los Angeles citizen wanting a quality life. I plan to demonstrate this over the next five months,” Pratt stated Wednesday night.
He added, “I’m a resident who said ‘Enough is enough’ and decided to take action. I’ll prove to all residents that I’m their mayor.”
Challenges in Vote Counting
California’s vote-counting process, which has previously faced criticism, is slow. Key races remained undecided days after the June 2 election. Nate Silver, a political data analyst, commented online that it is uncommon globally for elections to require weeks to finalize results. California’s system relies heavily on mail-in voting; ballots arriving within a week post-election are counted if postmarked by election day.
This thorough review process can leave elections undecided for extended periods, especially in close races. Representative Kevin Kiley remarked, “Other states manage timely vote counting. California’s failure to handle this reflects poorly and contributes to state issues.”
