ICE Traffic Stops Under Scrutiny

On Wednesday, Trump urged Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to continue traffic stops despite recent deadly incidents. He emphasized their importance in removing criminals. Earlier, reports indicated that the Trump administration had instructed ICE to suspend most vehicle stops. This directive followed an ICE officer shooting a Colombian driver in Maine and another officer killing a Mexican motorist in Houston within a week.

Criticism of ICE’s Enforcement Methods

The recent shootings have renewed criticism of ICE’s tactics. Federal officers claimed drivers used their vehicles as weapons. A third man in Florida died after being struck by a tractor-trailer while fleeing ICE officers. Since the Trump administration’s deportation push began, at least ten deaths have occurred during operations, including four involving individuals in vehicles.

Sen. Susan Collins from Maine urged the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to halt non-urgent vehicle stops. John Sandweg, former acting ICE director, estimated that there have been around 18 traffic stop shootings during Trump’s tenure.

DHS stated that the officer, fearing public safety threats, shot and killed Durán Guerrero, who attempted to flee during an ICE operation targeting individuals facing deportation orders.
