Authorities have announced the capture of an “armed and extremely dangerous” suspect involved in the shooting of a Virginia deputy. The arrest occurred in Surry County, North Carolina on Sunday, ending an extensive search.
The Incident
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Michael Puckett. Earlier in the day, Puckett was seen on a wildlife camera on Greenhill Road, near Mount Airy. A photo captured him wearing a baseball cap and some sort of covering.
Puckett is accused of ambushing two deputies during a welfare check on Friday night. This attack resulted in the death of 31-year-old Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputy, Logan Utt, a military veteran. Another officer was injured but survived, thanks to a ballistic vest.
Manhunt and Capture
Before Puckett’s arrest, a reward for information leading to his capture amounted to $60,000, with contributions from the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service. It remains unclear if this reward facilitated his capture.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office indicted Puckett on charges of aggravated murder in Virginia. Multiple agencies, including the FBI’s Richmond Field Office, U.S. Marshals Service, Virginia State Police, and several local and state agencies, assisted in the pursuit.
Details of the Attack
The violent incident took place before 9:30 p.m. when deputies were sent to a location for a welfare check at a family member’s request. During their encounter with Puckett, he reportedly fired at the officers, killing Utt and injuring another officer, who survived due to protective gear. Puckett then fled the scene.
Community’s Response
In the wake of the shooting, Carroll County Sheriff Kevin Kemp expressed his sentiments: “Becoming a deputy sheriff was a lifelong dream, and he worked every day to make Carroll County a safer place.” Utt leaves behind a wife and children.
In a statement, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger praised Deputy Utt’s bravery: “Deputy Logan Utt’s sacrifice is a testament to his bravery and dedication to his community.” She offered prayers for Utt’s family and the injured officer’s recovery.
The wounded deputy remains in stable condition, recovering from the injuries sustained during the encounter.
