Celine Dion took to the stage for the first time in six years as she continues her fight with stiff-person syndrome. Her return was emotional and eagerly anticipated. The 58-year-old singer began her 26-show residency at Plenitude Arena in Paris on September 12. She opened with her French-language song “On Ne Change Pas” before becoming emotional, as seen in several online videos.
These are, of course, tears of joy. I’m so delighted to see you,Dion expressed to the audience, as reported by People.
Dion discussed the importance of the performance and her long-awaited comeback. She stated, “I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage. So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing life!” She also expressed gratitude to her fans for their support and patience, saying, “I am everything I am because you loved me,” before performing “Because You Loved Me.”
Her career was disrupted in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement of her “Courage World Tour.” In January 2022, Dion canceled the North American leg, citing her slow recovery from severe muscle spasms.
During this period, Dion shared her health struggles in an emotional video.
I’ve always been an open book. I wasn’t ready to say anything before — but I’m ready now. I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time. And it’s been really difficult for me to face these challenges and talk about everything that I’ve been going through.
Dion disclosed she was diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare condition affecting one in a million people, according to the Cleveland Clinic. SPS leads to muscle stiffness, primarily in the trunk and legs, and can impact mobility and vocal cords.
In 2024, Dion appeared at the Grammy Awards, receiving a standing ovation. She documented her health journey in the Prime Video documentary “I Am: Celine Dion.” In July 2024, she performed Edith Piaf’s “L’Hymne à l’amour” at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. This marked her first live performance since revealing her diagnosis.
Dion’s Paris residency will feature iconic songs, including “My Heart Will Go On” and “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.” Despite challenges, Dion remains committed to performing.
I’m not giving up,she stated in 2023.And I can’t wait to see you again.
