Quarterback Drake Maye’s performance troubles continued on Sunday, prompting New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel to make a pivotal decision. He removed Maye from the game with eight minutes remaining, aiming to stem the struggle against the Jacksonville Jaguars, which resulted in a decisive 35-6 loss.
Maye contributed significantly to the team’s woes, with two interceptions and a lost fumble. Coach Vrabel expressed substantial concern, highlighting that turnovers hinder progress. “We have to take care of the football,” Vrabel stated, emphasizing the need to avoid forcing plays and to make sound decisions.
Maye’s turnovers are becoming a recurring issue. In addition to the three turnovers against the Jaguars, he had three in the season-opener against the Seattle Seahawks and another against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He now totals seven turnovers this season. Maye acknowledged the problem, saying, “I got to look myself in the mirror and take this as a turning point.”
The Patriots currently hold a 1-2 record, sparking discussions about Maye’s status among teammates. Despite the setbacks, support for Maye remains strong within the team. “Everybody in that locker room believes in him,” cornerback Christian Gonzalez affirmed.
The Patriots face unique challenges this year, including a more difficult schedule. Additionally, roster changes like releasing Stefon Diggs and acquiring A.J. Brown have yet to provide positive results due to Brown’s injury. CBS analyst Adam Archuleta highlighted the necessity for Maye and the Patriots to overcome their struggles. Up next, the Patriots visit the Buffalo Bills.
