In Mongbwalu, a town in the Democratic Republic of Congo, health workers are actively gathering medications for patients suspected of having the Bundibugyo virus. This marks a crucial step as trials for several promising drugs against the virus are underway.
In Rwampara, doctors are providing urgent care in a temporary Ebola treatment center. Dr. Papys Lame and his team are busy rehydrating patients suffering from intense diarrhea and vomiting. They are also managing those who are bleeding significantly and need blood transfusions, as well as patients experiencing respiratory distress.
The medical team diligently monitors each patient’s heart rate and blood pressure, addressing severe pain. Dr. Lame, overseeing Ebola response efforts in Congo for the Alliance for International Medical Action, notes improvements in recent outbreaks compared to those five years ago. “Today, we have more options, and more people survive,” he comments.
Despite these advancements, a specific treatment for the Bundibugyo virus remains elusive. The current outbreak in East Africa has seen at least 695 people infected, resulting in 138 deaths. Scientists are in a rigorous search for effective drugs.
Absence of Treatments for Bundibugyo Virus
In the past 50 years, most Ebola-related outbreaks have been caused by a different virus species, the Ebola virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends two specific drugs for treating the Ebola virus based on clinical trials.
Unfortunately, a treatment successful against one virus species does not necessarily work against another due to significant evolutionary differences. This scientific challenge explains the current absence of specialized treatments for the Bundibugyo virus.
