The Justice Department is currently investigating two lawsuits filed by E. Jean Carroll, a former magazine writer who accused Donald J. Trump of sexual assault. This investigation, as reported by The New York Times on Wednesday, centers on contributions made by Reid Hoffman, a billionaire and vocal critic of Trump, to help cover Ms. Carroll’s legal expenses.
Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, established a nonprofit that donated to Ms. Carroll’s legal team. Though the potential charges in this case remain unclear, prosecution could face significant hurdles. Andrew S. Boutros, the U.S. attorney in Chicago, stated on Thursday evening that no criminal investigation has been opened against Ms. Carroll. The statement did not mention Mr. Hoffman directly, but Mr. Hoffman later addressed the situation on social media.
Trump was found liable for sexually assaulting E Jean Carroll, defaming her, and now he’s going after her again.Mr. Hoffman emphasized that he supported Ms. Carroll’s lawsuit.
Ms. Carroll, through a representative, declined to comment on the situation. Prosecutors would have to overcome several obstacles if they were to pursue charges related to this inquiry. One key challenge lies in establishing the nature of Ms. Carroll’s statements during the trials concerning financial support from Mr. Hoffman.
In April 2023, Donald Trump’s legal team sent a letter to the judge ahead of one of Ms. Carroll’s civil trials. They accused her of failing to disclose Mr. Hoffman’s financial assistance. The outcome of this legal battle could have significant implications for future proceedings, if any, initiated by the Justice Department in response to Mr. Trump’s alleged retaliatory actions against his adversaries.
