ChatGPT users can now utilize a feature called Trusted Contact to reach out during emotional crises. Launched in May, this optional feature connects users with someone they trust if they’re experiencing serious safety concerns. Human connection plays a crucial role in suicide prevention, according to experts.
The Role of Trusted Contact
NPR first reported on the Trusted Contact feature in August. OpenAI spokesman Gaby Raila explained that ChatGPT can identify signs of distress and alert a user’s Trusted Contact. Users must opt-in to this feature beforehand.
“Good adoption” of the feature has been reported, though exact numbers remain undisclosed.
Signing Up for Trusted Contact
NPR wanted to understand how users learn about this feature. When colleague Megan Lim tested it, she found no initial mention of Trusted Contact during sign-up. When directly asked, ChatGPT clarified how to set it up in settings.
Without prior setup, the feature cannot alert contacts. However, ChatGPT can still guide distressed users to reach out for help or contact crisis hotlines.
OpenAI’s Raila noted that the feature isn’t available on ChatGPT voice yet but is under development. The feature might prompt users to set up a Trusted Contact during distressful chats.
Views from Mental Health Professionals
The Trusted Contact feature has mixed reactions. Holly Wilcox from the Center for Suicide Prevention at Johns Hopkins suggests offering it before emergencies. Ursula Whiteside of Now Matters Now found the setup process user-friendly.
Whiteside’s organization supports those with suicidal thoughts. She sees potential in Trusted Contact for those who value human interaction during crises. Jennifer Lockman from the University of Alabama remains cautious about the bot’s effectiveness in overcoming personal barriers.
“Another opportunity to provide human support and connection,” says Lockman.
OpenAI continues to refine when and how ChatGPT emphasizes the Trusted Contact feature. They are working with psychologists and researchers. Additional safeguards against self-harm, like suggesting breaks and providing crisis hotlines, are also in place.
Research is needed to assess the impact of this feature on preventing suicides. For those in crisis, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available at 988.
