Chicago White Sox manager Will Venable appreciated the All-Star break but eagerly awaited the return to action. Before Friday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, Venable expressed his excitement about his team, saying, “These guys work hard, play hard, and provide entertainment every day.”

The White Sox shared a piece of the first place in the American League Central with the Cleveland Guardians going into Friday’s game. This marked the 13th instance in franchise history of starting the “second half” in first place. The last time they held a significant division lead was in 2021.

This season, the team generated considerable excitement through their first 95 games, highlighted by the home run achievements of Munetaka Murakami, Miguel Vargas, and Colson Montgomery, along with consistent performances from outfielders Sam Antonacci and Tristan Peters. Venable stressed, “All that’s important is doing everything we can to win today.”

With the trade deadline on August 3, general manager Chris Getz indicated the possibility of the Sox being active buyers. “We feel really good about where we’re at, and candidly it’s one series at a time,” Getz said. The Sox plan to explore options to strengthen both their current and future prospects. Pitching often remains a priority, and they are prepared for various scenarios. The team has also relied on their farm system, with pitchers like Tanner McDougal, who began working out of the bullpen at Triple-A Charlotte, stepping up as needed.

The 2021 team that led at the break and secured the division title serves as an inspiration. To stay competitive, Venable noted the necessity of cleaning up on-field issues. He emphasized evaluating processes and sticking to what has been effective. “Just committing to the things on the field and in our preparation,” he said.

Understanding that much of the season remains, Venable commended the team’s ability to focus on the present. “For us, it’s about just doing those things that we can control and making sure that’s top of mind,” Venable stated. “These players have just done a great job of really flushing yesterday’s results and having a great attitude and coming to the ballpark ready to play.”
