Chilean Diplomat’s Assassination Anniversary

1 week ago 0

Orlando Letelier, a Chilean diplomat, was assassinated in a car-bombing on Embassy Row. This occurred fifty years ago and remains a significant event. A statue, captured in a photograph taken on February 25, 2018, stands outside the Chilean ambassador’s residence in Washington to honor Letelier. He and his colleague Ronni Moffitt were killed in the attack.

On the day of the assassination, Virgilio Paz Romero, a militant refugee from communist Cuba, allegedly used a remote control to detonate a bomb. The device was placed under the driver’s seat of a car occupied by Letelier and two others. As the car moved around Sheridan Circle, the blast resulted in the deaths of Letelier and Moffitt.

Now, fifty years after these events, there is potential for one of the assassins to be deported, bringing renewed attention to the case.
