Chipotle Removes Jalapeños Amid Salmonella Concerns

1 week ago 0

Chipotle Mexican Grill has taken jalapeños off the menu in certain locations. This decision follows an investigation into a potential salmonella link, as public health officials examine the situation.

Health and Safety Measures

Chipotle emphasized prioritizing health and safety for both guests and employees. The company proactively removed jalapeños as a precaution and has sourced replacements from different suppliers.

The original source of the jalapeños remains unspecified. These peppers had been distributed to multiple states and retailers, raising security concerns.

State and Federal Investigations

The Minnesota Department of Health confirmed a salmonella outbreak connected to various Mexican-style, quick-service restaurants. Jalapeños have emerged as the likely cause. Minnesota officials have identified 110 cases, with most linked to Chipotle customers who dined between mid-June and mid-July. However, not all cases involved Chipotle.

“Based on all the evidence so far, the food that made people sick was served at other restaurants as well,” stated Carlota Medus, senior epidemiologist supervisor in the Minnesota Department of Health’s Foodborne Diseases Unit.

The department noted Chipotle’s cooperation and is not worried about the chain currently. However, they caution that the outbreak’s status is still uncertain, and other locations may still be serving contaminated food.

Other states are part of the ongoing investigation, as stated by the Minnesota Department of Health. The Food and Drug Administration has launched a federal level traceback probe, not limited to jalapeños, after detecting clusters of salmonella cases. The investigation began on July 22, with state and federal cooperation.

In response, the FDA acknowledged Chipotle’s collaboration and promised to share updates when available.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declined to comment further on the case.

Salmonella Outbreak Concerns

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. While many recover within a week, young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems may face severe complications, potentially requiring hospitalization.

Chipotle recalls past experiences with outbreaks, notably between 2015 and 2018, involving E. coli and norovirus, which impacted sales. The company has since improved food safety practices.

The current outbreak challenges diners and the restaurant industry, already dealing with unrelated cyclospora illnesses traced to shredded lettuce. Chipotle remains unaffected by these investigations but anticipates reduced sales.

Shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill fell nearly 10% on Tuesday.
