Individuals gathered at Rededicate 250, a significant event on the National Mall, to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. The event, centered around conservative Christian values, featured worship through Christian music, prayers, and speeches by representatives from the Trump administration. This gathering aimed to acknowledge divine guidance, reflect on the national heritage, and dedicate the country as ‘One Nation under God.’
Organized by Freedom 250, a collaboration between public entities and the White House, the event featured 19 religious leaders, with 18 identifying as Christian, predominantly evangelical. Noteworthy participants included Paula White-Cain, Rev. Franklin Graham, and Bishop Robert Barron. Rabbi Meir Soloveichik was the sole non-Christian to speak.
President Trump, although absent due to golfing commitments, contributed a recorded message sharing Biblical scripture. Other officials, such as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, also sent video messages. Lawmakers, including Republican Sen. Tim Scott, addressed the crowd, with House Speaker Mike Johnson leading them in prayer, emphasizing divine origin of rights.
Chris Tomlin, a renowned Christian musician, performed during the event. However, the gathering faced criticism for promoting Christian nationalism and blurring the line between church and state. The Interfaith Alliance projected pro-religious freedom messages on the National Gallery of Art, voicing concerns over the event’s implications for democracy.
Rachel Laser, representing Americans United for Separation of Church and State, argued the event threatened the principle of church-state separation. She stated that this event reflected an agenda pushing a singular Christian perspective on the nation, undermining America’s history of religious diversity.
Kathryn Post and Yonat Shimron also contributed to this report, noting that Americans United for Separation of Church and State financially supports NPR.
