After ending last season with a 7-6 record, expectations were high for Dabo Swinney and Clemson to show a different performance this year. The team boasts a strong wide receiver duo in T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr. They also revamped the rest of the lineup by bringing in notable transfers like Chris Johnson Jr., Elliot Washington II, and London Merritt. The Tigers secured the 20th-ranked recruiting class as well. Despite these efforts, they fell short against LSU this past Saturday.
In the debut game of Lane Kiffin as head coach for LSU, the Tigers dominated Clemson with a 51-10 victory. Clemson was limited to only 145 total yards. Swinney, already under scrutiny after last season’s performance, now faces increased pressure following this significant loss.
As CBS Sports’ Robby Kalland notes, Clemson can save $3 million by opting to fire Swinney during the 2026 season instead of waiting. His contract buyout follows a descending flat rate: currently standing at $57 million, it would increase to $60 million in total compensation at the end of 2027. This is the last year of this declining payment structure.
Swinney remains an iconic figure for Clemson football, having led them to two national championships. The notion of his dismissal is striking given his achievements, including three Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards, nine ACC championships, and holding an overall record of 187-54. His .776 winning percentage is among the highest in college football history.
Football is a demanding sport, and continuous losses could intensify the discussion around his buyout. Clemson’s upcoming schedule is packed, hosting Georgia Southern next. They face challenges with matches against ACC competitor UNC, and later against Cal, Miami, Charleston Southern, Virginia Tech, and Florida State, all before November.
