Led by a well-known Nepal-born mountaineer, a group of climbers has gone missing following an avalanche on Broad Peak in northern Pakistan. Broad Peak, at 26,401 feet, ranks as the 12th highest mountain globally, located in the Karakoram range.
The incident was reported on July 30, 2026, by The Associated Press. According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the avalanche affected a team led by Nirmal Purja. The climbers have not been in contact since, stated Karrar Haidri, the club’s Vice President, in a statement on Thursday night.
The expedition consists of ten international climbers, including five from Nepal. Other members are Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi from Hunza, Omani climber Nathira, American climber Mallory Geis, a Chinese climber named Wang, and another unidentified foreign climber.
The Alpine Club’s President, Maj. Gen. Irfan Arshad, and senior leaders are engaged with government officials for a swift search-and-rescue mission. Efforts to deploy helicopters and other rescue resources are underway, though they depend on weather and operational feasibility.
Nirmal Purja, also known as Nims Dai, is recognized for climbing the 14 highest peaks worldwide in 189 days in 2019, a record until a 2023 achievement by a Norwegian woman and a Nepali Sherpa. His feats featured in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.”
Pakistan hosts many of the world’s top mountains, drawing climbers globally aiming to conquer these peaks.
“The Alpine Club of Pakistan is actively monitoring this situation and working with all involved parties,” the statement conveyed. The club expressed solidarity with the families of the climbers and the global mountaineering community.
