CNN Stands by Reporting Amid Criticism Over Anonymous Sources in Iran War Coverage

CNN defended its reporting following challenges from retired Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt regarding the use of anonymous sources about the Iran war. A CNN spokesperson told Fox News Digital, ‘We stand by our reporting.’

Joseph Holstead, public affairs adviser to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, declined to comment on CNN’s report or Kimmitt’s assessment. However, he agreed that CNN’s sources lacked firsthand knowledge of the discussions described.

During a Saturday interview, Kimmitt criticized CNN for relying on unnamed sources. He expressed concerns about the network’s claims involving negotiations and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine.

‘I read the CNN article and I saw quotes from unnamed sources that last week were saying there were no negotiations going on, and that proved not to be true,’ Kimmitt stated.

By Kimmitt’s interview, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance confirmed negotiations with Iran. Trump mentioned his involvement, while Vance highlighted talks about restoring oil and gas traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

RNC national spokesperson Natalie Baldassarre defended Trump’s foreign policy approach. She stated, ‘President Trump’s ‘Peace through Strength’ foreign policy has been effective in preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon – something voters overwhelmingly support.’

CNN’s article, which did not allege that negotiations were nonexistent, included insights from three sources. They indicated Caine had cautioned senior Trump officials that air strikes may not achieve objectives and that escalation posed risks.

‘Caine is looking for an off-ramp,’ one source commented.

The report cited Caine’s spokesperson, Joseph Holstead. Holstead refuted anonymous descriptions of Caine’s private discussions, refusing to disclose specifics shared with Trump.

Holstead remarked, ‘We do not discuss the Chairman’s confidential conversations…nor do we comment on anonymous, agenda-driven characterizations.’

Kimmitt’s critique extended beyond CNN’s sourcing. He highlighted that U.S. goals on Iran’s nuclear and missile programs and regional proxy support remained unfulfilled.

‘I think it’s fair to say that we are not close to achieving our strategic objectives,’ Kimmitt said.

He added that Caine had to consider global military obligations, pointing to the need to balance challenges involving China and Ukraine.

CNN anchor Omar Jimenez emphasized the network’s preference for named sources in reports. He remarked, ‘I sure wish more folks would go on the record.’

The dispute over sourcing arose as the Trump administration engaged in negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command reportedly paused attacks to facilitate potential agreements.

Fox News Digital contacted Kimmitt for additional comments but had not received a response.
