CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer made a public correction after incorrectly suggesting that U.S. military personnel abroad would be affected by the Trump administration’s approach to mail-in voting.
During Friday’s episode of “The Situation Room,” Blitzer conversed with Democratic Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger. They discussed a lawsuit filed by Virginia and other states opposing President Trump’s executive order aimed at limiting mail-in voting. A federal judge had recently placed a 14-day restraining order on this order.
The continued attacks that we’re seeing from the Trump administration are efforts to instill fear and discourage people from voting by mail, which is a valid and secure option for many,” Spanberger said during the program.
Blitzer responded, noting the reliance of military people in Virginia on mail-in ballots to voice their opinions.
“That’s true,” Spanberger replied. “Military, diplomatic, and intelligence service members posted overseas depend on mailed ballots to participate in elections.”
However, Blitzer later issued a clarification, emphasizing that his comments about the impact on military and overseas voters were incorrect. These ballots are not subject to the Postal Service’s new rules under Trump’s executive order.
Those groups are protected under the Uniformed and Overseas Absentee Voting Act,” Blitzer stated to ensure accurate information was provided.
A CNN spokesperson referred to Blitzer’s clarification and did not provide further comments.
