Coby Bryant’s Challenging Start with the Chicago Bears

Coby Bryant’s time with the Chicago Bears hasn’t started as hoped. Bryant faced an emotional moment when he was carted off the training camp field on Monday due to a knee injury. Despite his initial fear, there’s a silver lining. Bryant will need to miss some time, but the outcome isn’t as severe as he feared.

After experiencing knee pain during practice while facing tight end Cole Kmet, the injury prognosis is better than Bryant anticipated. ESPN reports that the seasoned safety will miss eight to ten weeks due to a hyperextended knee, bone bruise, and small fracture—not a season-ending setback.

Bryant joined the Bears with a three-year, $40 million contract, aimed to strengthen a revamped secondary. His notable performance with the Seattle Seahawks—securing seven interceptions and contributing to a Super Bowl win—proved his worth.

The Bears’ season opener is five weeks away, meaning Bryant’s absence may not stretch out too long. His potential return is crucial, given his projected role as a cornerstone player in the Bears’ defense.

“It always sucks to see,” second-year tight end Colston Loveland remarked regarding Bryant’s injury. “That’s part of it. You know, he’s tough, he’s a dog. He’s going to be fine.”

In the meantime, the Bears’ depth chart faces scrutiny. The team’s first-round pick, Oregon standout safety Dillon Thieneman, was expected to start alongside Bryant. However, Cam Lewis might shift from slot cornerback to safety due to Kyler Gordon’s previous injury.

Lewis, another free agent acquisition, comes from the Buffalo Bills, joining the Bears amidst departures of several key players, including Kevin Byard, Jaquan Brisker, Nahshon Wright, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Jonathan Owens.
