Remembering the Tragic Day

Raz Zarfati, whose brother Ron Zarfati was killed in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on Israel, attended a memorial service on the third anniversary of the attack. The ceremony was held at the Nova music festival site near Kibbutz Reim in southern Israel.

On this day, Israelis gather to remember the attack that took the lives of 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages. This attack also led to a severe conflict in Gaza. Families in southern Israel will mourn at various locations, including intersections, bomb shelters, and the music festival site overtaken by militants.

This marks the first anniversary when all hostages are home, opening a new chapter in the grieving process. However, for Palestinians, this day highlights ongoing struggles, as they endure the consequences of Israel’s response in Gaza.

Palestinians Face Continued Hardship

In Gaza, over the past three years, many continue to live in dire conditions. Around 2 million people reside in overcrowded tent camps. Much of Gaza is in ruins, and over half the region is controlled by Israeli forces. Despite a ceasefire nearly a year ago, Israeli airstrikes persist almost daily.

The anniversary also underscores changes in the region. Israeli troops occupy parts of southern Lebanon, and the conflict with Hezbollah, which began in support of Hamas, remains ongoing. Meanwhile, tensions between Iran and the United States have led to wider regional unrest and economic disruptions.

A Hostage’s Return and New Life

Elkana Bohbot, a former hostage, experiences the anniversary for the first time in freedom. Taken from the Nova music festival, he endured 738 days underground in harsh conditions. Since his release last year, he has undergone extensive rehabilitation, authored a book, and embarked on a speaking tour. His newborn daughter signifies resilience amidst adversity.

Bohbot’s experience highlights the personal toll of such conflicts. His resolve during captivity to have another child as a symbol of hope has been fulfilled.

Gaza’s Struggles Continue

No commemorative events are expected in Gaza. The region’s ongoing crisis, with severe restrictions on goods and aid, leaves many in desperation. Gaza’s Health Ministry reports over 74,000 Palestinians killed, many of them civilians, with dire conditions persisting despite the ceasefire.

Wider Geopolitical Implications

The impact of the Oct. 7 attack ripples across the Middle East, affecting global politics and economics. Israeli actions in Syria and Lebanon have displaced significant populations. Meanwhile, joint military actions by Israel and the United States against Iran have intensified regional instability.

In Israel, the aftermath of the attack and the upcoming election highlight internal divisions, particularly over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the conflict. The government’s memorials reflect these divides, coinciding with discourse over the lack of an official inquiry into the attack’s failures.

Increased violence has also been observed in the West Bank, with right-wing settlers attacking Palestinians, further complicating peace prospects.
