Concerns Over Illegal Marijuana Operations in Northern California

1 hour ago 0

Rep. James Gallagher of California has called on FBI Director Kash Patel to address rampant illegal marijuana farming in Northern California. These operations have led to negative impacts on local communities, particularly ranchers, due to illegal immigrant labor and resource depletion. Gallagher highlighted concerns about possible Chinese organized-crime involvement.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office reported that illegal cultivation significantly harms the area. Local groundwater supplies are drained to support the marijuana farms, causing a strain on resources for residents and farmers. Plastic-covered greenhouses, known as ‘hoop houses,’ are commonly used in these illegal operations.

In one significant enforcement action, authorities executed search warrants across Tulare, Kern, and Los Angeles counties, targeting illegal grow sites. These actions reflect a growing effort to combat such operations statewide.

“The consequences have been devastating, with residents facing depleted water supplies and threats to their safety,” Gallagher expressed in a letter, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

In the Mount Shasta Vista area alone, estimates suggest up to 7,000 illegal growers operate, impacting federal lands such as the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. In 2025, significant efforts led to the eradication of nearly 333,000 illegal marijuana plants.

Gallagher’s concerns extend to the financing of these operations, potentially involving Chinese organized crime. A federal investigation in 2018 linked a large-scale illegal marijuana operation to Chinese funding, resulting in the seizure of over 100 properties in the Sacramento area.

Environmental damage from illegal sites includes the use of banned and toxic pesticides, some with labels in Chinese, raising health risks for residents and first responders. Siskiyou County has identified at least 27 illicit pesticide compounds at these sites.

Such activities not only strain local resources but also present broader environmental and health hazards.
