Rep. Gottheimer’s Critique of Zohran Mamdani

Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat from New Jersey, recently criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. This comes after Mamdani expressed controversial views regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, particularly concerning alleged war crimes.

Gottheimer accused Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, of attempting to ‘hijack’ the Democratic Party. Gottheimer stated, “He’s not a Democrat, he’s socialist, and we know that the whole socialist movement is attempting to hijack the Democratic Party.” He further alleged that Mamdani and others hold anti-American, anti-democratic, and anti-capitalist views.

Mamdani’s Views and Election Security Concerns

Gottheimer criticized Mamdani’s defense of an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for Netanyahu. Mamdani’s inability to enforce such a warrant raised questions, as he later admitted he lacks the authority to make an arrest. Mamdani had called on the federal government to execute the ICC’s arrest warrant if Netanyahu visits New York City.

Adding to the political turmoil, there were issues in New Jersey related to voting integrity. A software error led to over 6,000 non-citizens being mistakenly added to voter rolls, underscoring concerns about election security.

Broader Implications

Mamdani defended his position during a press conference, stating his commitment to universal politics. “My interest in executing that warrant is not specific to Benjamin Netanyahu,” he said, emphasizing a broader call for accountability in war crimes.

Gottheimer questioned Mamdani’s focus, urging the mayor to prioritize more immediate city issues like trash collection and road maintenance. “The mayor is clearly obsessed with this issue. He should probably be a little more obsessed with making sure that his city is running well,” Gottheimer commented.

Gottheimer also highlighted a double standard in Mamdani’s approach. He referenced Iranian leaders visiting New York without similar calls for arrest, despite Iran’s hostile actions against the United States.
